Why do mountains fascinate us? A story of the mountains

Whether in tales of discovery, books by explorers or tales from another time, the history of the mountains has always aroused fascination, wonder and sometimes fear.

The mountains are the taste of discovery, a somewhat crazy and mysterious adventure, a journey out of time, a magical and mystical atmosphere...
From forests to scree, from lunar landscapes to green valleys, from age-old glaciers to light powder snow, the mountain is the diversity of its landscapes, its fauna and its flora.

By the way, what is a mountain?

According to the Larousse definition, a mountain is a “natural and very significant elevation of the ground”.

It is defined by its slope as well as its height, but each relief being different, it can characterize a steep summit as a simple hill. The mountain encompasses the cold summits covered with glaciers, resulting from collisions between plates, such as bubbling volcanoes born by subduction (sliding of one plate under another).

Their specific climate and steep slopes making total exploitation impossible, the mountains abound in treasures of biodiversity and ecosystems. Indeed, sparsely inhabited, men cannot exert pressure on animal species that enjoy great freedom. Nearly a third of the planet's protected areas are in the mountains!

The story of the mountains, or that of life

From their appearance on our globe from the Cretaceous (around -145 million years ago), to the development of heated detachable chairlifts, and including the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786, the mountains are full of stories.

The history of the mountains is told through its inhabitants and explorers, from the Quechuas of the Andean mountains to the Nepalese Sherpas passing by the alpine shepherds. And the history of the mountains is above all that of our Planet, and sources of life, they will never cease to amaze us. Despite their cold appearance, the mountains are very much alive, and their heart vibrates just as much as that of its inhabitants who carry within them the very essence of these territories.

The story of the sacred and divine mountains

For a long time people have considered mountains to be sacred because sheltering the deities. They have long been and still are a source of mistrust, but also of respect. The history of the mountains is full of famous examples.

Mount Olympus in Greece was the refuge of the Gods. Mount Sinai was where Moses first met God at the burning bush. In Asia, the sacred mountains are legion: Mount Fuji in Japan, Mount Agung in Indonesia which is a divine mountain for the inhabitants of Bali and many others.

Mountains at the heart of economic development

The mountains begin to be studied scientifically from the XVIIIe century, and also inspire many artists. It was at the same time that hydrotherapy appeared and the mountains became " health reserves“. The golden age of European mountaineering developed from 1854 to 1865, and the Alps then became objects of conquest, despite their dangerousness.

At the end of the XIXe century, the economic character interferes in the reliefs because the mountains are aat the heart of development hydroelectricity. In the middle of the XXe, their access is then facilitated, and tourism is envisaged in these regions which at the time seemed inaccessible. The mountain landscapes are disrupted, are a source of studies to develop them, and quickly become the terrain of winter sports and more generally, places of leisure.
