Yoga, from the Sanskrit Yuj, means “Union”: that of body and mind and union of oneself with one's environment. Before showing you the benefits of yoga in the mountains, let's take a look at the practice of yoga. Integrating body, mind and spirit, it encompasses a wide spectrum of physical, mental and spiritual techniques that allow the practitioner to develop a more precise level of awareness, particularly of the present moment.
From yesterday to today, yoga in all its forms
Yoga is a thousand-year-old discipline that appeared in India, rich in teaching and wisdom. Although indications point to the birth of a spirituality of a mystical and emotional character 7000 years before J. - C., the first traces of the appearance of yoga date back to the Vth century before J. - C. Classical Hindu texts describe the yoga, speaking in particular of three paths of liberation: the path of knowledge, that of selfless action, and the path of spiritual devotion.
In contemporary times, yoga is lived in many ways with many disciplines and techniques, but its essence remains the same. The most practiced remains Hatha Yoga (“yoga of effort”), which is based on body work and mental attitude.
Yoga in the mountains, or tenfold mindfulness
Yoga brings awareness of the present moment, well-being, physical and mental plenitude, appeasement, serenity... This description strangely resembles the feelings that invade us when we contemplate the mountains, when the gaze is lost in the multiple details that slip on the summits, when trying to follow the ridge line which contrasts with the sky. Nothing is more inspiring than standing on your mat in such a sumptuous environment, and drawing your energy from that of the mountains, strong, immense, proud. Find your visual anchor of yoga in the mountains to keep your balance (drishti) in the meanders of the reliefs that are offered to you, and to breathe the pure alpine air, with your whole being.
Tadasana or mountain pose
It is not for nothing that one of the main poses of yoga is called Tadasana (from "tada" which means mountain in Sanskrit), or mountain pose. Marking the beginning and the end of the salutation to the sun, it is practiced standing, feet hip-width apart, arms along the body and palms turned outwards to open the shoulders or hands joined at the level of the torso, chin slightly tucked in towards the chest to lengthen the spine.
Practicing this asana (yoga pose) promotes stability, solidity and strength… Tadasana eliminates bad positions and develops correct skeletal alignment. It also makes it possible to become aware of a good distribution of the weight of the body. Tadasana is a pose that roots us to the ground to establish a solid base to raise to the sky, similar to the top of the mountain. Calm wins over us, offering us stability, physical and mental solidity...
