Nestled in a setting of snow-capped mountains, the activity of the sleigh dogs captivates young and old alike with its magic, authenticity, and complete change of scenery. Halfway between Nordic tradition and outdoor recreation, this unique experience transports you back in time, to the rhythm of the powerful and synchronized steps of magnificent Greenland dogs, led by passionate mushers.

An ancestral tradition from the Far North

The history of sled dogs dates back several millennia. Originating in Siberia, and later widely used by the Inuit peoples and indigenous tribes of the Arctic, these dogs were life companions, hunting partners, and essential means of transportation on snow and ice. Iconic breeds include the Siberian Husky, the Alaskan Malamute, and the Greenland dog, rustic, hardy and designed for extreme cold.

While sleds were once used to survive in hostile environments, today they have become true vehicles of emotion. In French Alpine resorts, such as The 3 Valleys ou Paradiski, they offer a wild and poetic interlude, as close as possible to nature.

The experience of dog sledding

Guided by a musher – the name given to the sled driver – you embark on an extraordinary ride in the Alps. Wrapped in thick blankets and nestled in a traditional wooden sled, you glide along forest trails or snowy plateaus, pulled by a pack of powerful and spirited dogs.

Contrary to what one might think, this is not a mad dash through the snow. The pace is adapted for a leisure walk contemplative, which allows you to observe the landscapes, feel the energy of the dogs, and talk with the musher about his job, his dogs and his often unusual daily life. A true human and animal encounter.

To find out more, read the interview with Mathias our musher in La Plagne which invites you to discover thesummer activity of cani-rando, with the same dogs that pull the sleds in winter.

Dog sledding

An anecdote: when the dogs leave without the sled!

A musher from La Plagne humorously tells us about a mishap that has become legendary in his team:

“One morning, as I was finishing preparing the sled for a family outing, I wanted to quickly adjust a sled attachment. Just as I had time to turn around to grab a strap… the dogs, overexcited at the idea of leaving, took off abruptly – without the sled, which wasn’t yet properly attached! The result: eight dogs launched at full speed into the snow, their harnesses in the air, and me running behind them, screaming… A cartoon scene! Luckily, they stopped a few dozen meters further on, a little disoriented. Since then, I check each attachment twice, even if the children are urging me to leave!”

This little mishap, without any seriousness, reminds us how lively, enthusiastic and always ready to run at full speed these dogs are!
