The History of Alpine Skiing: From Utilitarian Origins to a Winter Sport

Le Alpine skiing originated more than 4 years ago in Scandinavia, where it was primarily used as a means of locomotion in winter. Wooden planks and rudimentary poles made it easier to move through the snow. It wasn't until the 000th century, with the advent of modern skiing in Norway, that the ski becomes a sport. The Alpine skiing, as we know it today, was born in the Alpes at the end of the 19th century and enjoyed growing popularity after the Second World War with the development of mountain tourism and ski resorts like Méribel in the 1950s.

The two largest ski areas in the world: Les 3 Vallées and Paradiski

France is fortunate to be home to the two largest ski areas in the world, both located in the Alpes and more precisely in Savoy.

The 3 Valleys

With more than 600 km of slopes connected with skis on feet, The 3 Valleys bring together the legendary stations of Courchevel, Meribel, Les Menuires et Val Thorens, the highest station in Europe. It is a true paradise for skiers of all levels, with modern infrastructure, a wide variety of slopes and spectacular panoramas. Skiing in Courchevel and Méribel transports you to an exceptional environment, both in terms of unspoiled nature and in terms of resorts with unique charm. Courchevel, renowned for its refinement, combines luxury and tradition with its luxurious chalets, its 5-star hotels and gourmet restaurants. A few valleys away, Méribel charms with its typically Savoyard architecture: stone and wood chalets, slate roofs, and an urban planning perfectly integrated into the Alpine landscape. These two resorts offer a chic and warm atmosphere, ideal for combining ski alpin quality and mountain lifestyle.

Paradiski

Composed of the stations of La Plagne et Les ArcsParadiski extends 425 km of slopes and offers an incredible diversity of terrain. Connected by the famous cable car Vanoise Express, this area allows you to ski without ever doing the same descent twice. From forests to glaciers, the experience is immersive and complete. La Plagne is distinguished by its multiple villages, each with its own identity, ranging from modern high-altitude resorts to more traditional hamlets, with chalets of stone and wood. On the side of Les Arcs, the architecture is bold and visionary: designed in the 60s by Charlotte Perriand, the resort blends modernism and landscape integration, with buildings with clean lines perfectly oriented towards the mountains. Skiing here also means living a unique aesthetic experience, between grandiose nature and architectural heritage.

High-altitude alpine ski resorts

The ski resorts The 3 Valleys in Méribel and Courchevel, and Paradiski in La Plagne, and Les Arcs are all located at high altitudes, with over 70% of the ski area above 2000 meters. In La Plagne, you can ski on the glacier up to 3000 meters. The altitude and mastery of snow maintenance promote optimal snow cover. This allows skiing throughout the winter season, from December to the end of April.

The different types of alpine ski slopes

To find your way around the resort, the slopes are classified by level of difficulty:
    • Green : ideal for beginners, with a very gentle slope.
    • blue : for skiers who have acquired a little experience.
    • red : reserved for good skiers, with steeper slopes.
    • black : the most technical, often very steep and sometimes not groomed.
Fun ski areas are set up on the slopes with Fun slopes, and boarder cross, Slalom and Freestyle areas.

Did you know?

Do you know that the ski almost didn't become an Olympic sport because of... cows? At the 1936 Winter Olympics in Germany, some alpine disciplines were contested by the Nordic countries, who believed that skiing should only be practiced on flat terrain, like cross-country skiing. It was only after intense negotiations – and despite the protests of Bavarian farmers worried about their pastures – that the Alpine skiing officially enters the Olympic program!

Why rent a chalet for a ski holiday?

Pass his ski holidays in a chalet is an experience in itself. Here's why:
    • Comfort and authenticity : with their wooden architecture, the chalets offer a warm atmosphere after a day on the slopes.
    • Amazing views : often located at altitude, they allow you to enjoy magnificent panoramas of the snow-capped peaks.
    • Spacious spaces : unlike small apartments in resorts, chalets are suitable for families or groups of friends, offering comfortable spaces for reunions and real privacy for everyone.
    • Premium services : many chalets include a spa, sauna, jacuzzi, fireplace, or even a private swimming pool. We organize your winter vacation Tailor-made. For added comfort, catering services with a private chef or meal delivery allow you to make the most of your stay. We can book all your mountain sports and relaxation activities for you.
    • Proximity to the slopes Many chalets are located at the foot of the slopes, or even "ski-in/ski-out," meaning they are directly accessible on skis. Your car is also on vacation in the parking lot for the duration of your stay, and you can get around the resort on foot or by taking the free shuttle.
Rent a ski chalet allows you to combine the pleasure of skiing with that of finding yourself in a cozy cocoon in the mountains.
