Discover the La Plagne bobsleigh track

Built for the 1992 Albertville Olympics, the La Plagne bobsleigh and skeleton track is the only French track. Each winter, it welcomes some 12,000 visitors who come to challenge themselves there. 19 bends, 1.5 km long, 14% maximum gradient – those are the dizzying measurements of this giant ice slide.

To let the general public discover these very specific sliding sensations, its team of passionate, highly specialised experts have designed devices unique in the world specifically dedicated to this practice. So let’s get going!

Bobsleigh introduction

The bob raft for a first taste

This is the softest of the formulas offered to visitors, perfect for a family or friends’ descent. Doable from 1.30 m height, the device can carry 4 people at a time for a self-guided, self-braked descent in complete safety. Although it is the most accessible type of descent, you will still approach 80 km/h…

Speed luge, for a face-to-face descent with the track

From age 16, the curious can try this odd luge in which you lie solo in a semi-reclined position.

Facing the track, the view of the 19 bends is unbeatable – provided you keep your eyes wide open! Like the bob raft, this luge is self-guided and self-braked, letting you fully enjoy this descent at 90 km/h, lying just a few centimetres from the ice!

Bob racing, like a pro

The ultimate discipline offered to the general public on the track, bob racing is the one that comes closest to real competition conditions. On board: 3 passengers aged at least 16 and a professional pilot who guides the device and takes it to exponential speed, sometimes reaching up to 120 km/h. Anecdotally, the highest speed ever reached on the La Plagne track is 134 km/h… You get the idea – the faint-hearted should refrain: the sensations are extreme, the G-force impressive. Quite simply, if you lower your head during the descent, you will not be able to lift it again until the end…

Bobsleigh top-level version

Beyond the tourist activity, the La Plagne track is very much active and regularly hosts international competitions in 2-man bob, 4-man bob, or impressive skeleton (luge on the stomach, head first!). As recently as January 2020, it hosted a World Cup event and was, on that occasion, the stage of a fierce race against the clock.

Many athletes fear La Plagne because it is a demanding, technical track. But that is not the case for the French, who race at home and know it inside out, having practised it since their beginnings, almost from childhood.

And for the curious, national teams come regularly to train. You can then go and admire them along the track – keep your eyes wide open, because they go fast!
