Yoga

Time for yourself, time to recharge — the mountain yoga session takes place outdoors or indoors depending on the conditions, in summer and winter. Breathing exercises, introduction to first postures, or refinement for the more dedicated — the teacher will adapt to each level to give you a beneficial experience.

Yoga is an age-old practice rooted in the spiritual and philosophical traditions of ancient India. More than a simple form of physical exercise, yoga is an art of living, a discipline that seeks to unite body, mind and soul. Today, this practice has won over the whole world, offering physical, mental and spiritual benefits to millions of practitioners. Practising yoga in the mountains, especially during a chalet stay, adds a unique and profound dimension to this experience by combining the calm of nature with the power of altitude.

The origins of Yoga: an ancestral practice

The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit “yuj”, meaning “to unite” or “to connect”. This practice has its roots over 5,000 years ago in the ancient sacred texts of India, such as the Vedas and the Upanishads. However, the foundational text of modern yoga is undoubtedly the Yoga Sūtras by Patanjali, written around 2,000 years ago. This text defines yoga as the art of controlling the fluctuations of the mind, a path to self-realisation and inner peace.

Yoga has developed in different forms over the centuries, giving rise to many styles such as Hatha YogaKundalini YogaAshtanga Yoga and Bikram Yoga. Each form has its specific features, but all share a common goal: to harmonise body, breath and mind.

Physical conditions to practise yoga

Contrary to what many people think, you don’t need to be particularly flexible or strong to start yoga. This practice is accessible to all, whatever your age or fitness level. However, certain precautions should be taken to avoid injuries and maximise benefits:

  • Flexibility and mobility: Although flexibility is not a prerequisite, it develops with practice. Some postures can be demanding, but it’s always possible to adapt the poses to make them accessible.
  • Muscular strength: Yoga gradually strengthens muscles, especially those of the core and legs. Styles such as Vinyasa and Ashtanga are more physical, while Yin or Hatha are gentler.
  • Mental state: Yoga requires concentration and a degree of letting go. Regular practice helps reduce stress, improve mental clarity and strengthen emotional resilience.
  • Breathing and endurance: Breathing techniques (pranayama) are essential to master vital energy and support physical effort.

The benefits of practising yoga in the mountains

Practising yoga in the mountains, during your chalet stay in the Alps, offers unique advantages. Pure air, sweeping landscapes and remoteness from urban noise create the ideal atmosphere to reconnect with yourself. Here are some of the main benefits:

  1. Improved breathing and oxygenation
The mountain altitude encourages the lungs to work more efficiently, increasing respiratory capacity and endurance. The purity of the air supports better oxygenation of the body, stimulating metabolism and strengthening the immune system.
  2. Reduction of stress and anxiety
The mountains offer a naturally calming environment, ideal for meditation and relaxation. The peaceful summits and the sound of the wind in the trees create the perfect atmosphere to soothe the mind and reduce anxiety.
  3. A deeper connection with nature
Practising yoga outdoors, surrounded by forests and snow-capped peaks, strengthens the feeling of connection with nature. It can bring a profound sense of inner peace and gratitude.
  4. Strengthened balance and proprioception
The uneven mountain terrain demands better balance and greater body awareness, improving stability and coordination.
  5. Natural detoxification
Physical effort combined with fresh air helps eliminate toxins through perspiration, cleansing both body and mind.
  6. Stimulation of vital energy (Prana)
The mountains, often considered sacred places, are renowned for their vibrant energy. This energy strengthens vitality, inspiration and creativity.

Tips for practising yoga in the mountains

  • Physical preparation: Before setting off, it can be useful to strengthen the legs and core to handle elevation gain and altitude.
  • Suitable equipment: Bring a non-slip mat, breathable clothing and a meditation cushion for added comfort.
  • Hydration and nutrition: At high altitude, the body needs more water to compensate for rapid dehydration. Favour light, nourishing meals to support your practice.
  • Respect for nature: Keep the principles of yoga in mind, such as Ahimsa (non-violence), by respecting the environment and avoiding any negative impact on the fragile mountain ecosystems.
