Downhill mountain biking
Downhill mountain biking in Savoie: a thrill-packed activity in the Alps
The French Alps are a spectacular playground for mountain sports enthusiasts. While snow-covered peaks and ski slopes often steal the show, summer in Savoie reveals a whole other side, with vast networks of trails and dizzying descents. Downhill mountain biking, also known as downhill, is one of the most exhilarating disciplines on offer here. Between La Plagne, Les Arcs, Méribel and Courchevel, riders of all levels will find tracks built for adrenaline and pure enjoyment. Let’s dive together into a world where speed and technical skill come together to create unforgettable experiences.

The origins of downhill mountain biking: from slopes to performance
Downhill mountain biking was born in 1970s California, when cycling enthusiasts began racing down the mountains of Marin County on modified bikes. The practice quickly turned into a fully fledged extreme sport, with its competitions, champions and technological breakthroughs. In Europe, the Alps have become an iconic location for downhill mountain biking, thanks to their spectacular drops in altitude and breathtaking scenery.
Today, downhill mountain biking is a recognised discipline, with world championships and legendary races such as the Megavalanche at Alpe d’Huez. In Savoie, the discipline rapidly found its place, taking advantage of the infrastructure developed for skiing and of landscapes naturally suited to downhill riding.
The atmosphere on the trails
The atmosphere on downhill trails is unique. You find a tight-knit community, passionate about speed, thrills and nature. The hum of disc brakes, the smell of damp earth and the palpable adrenaline create an electric atmosphere at the bike park.
Riders, whether beginners or pros, often share moments of camaraderie on the lifts, swapping notes on the best lines, the latest tricks or simply how a particularly technical track felt. It is also a sport in which mutual support is key: people give advice, encourage one another and sometimes lend a hand to recover from a bad fall.
We recommend starting the activity with an instructor who will share their tips for getting going. After a quick introduction (cornering position, braking, safety basics…), the instructor will guide you down purpose-built downhill tracks (bike park). In summer as in winter, the difficulty depends on the colour: green, blue, red or black. Have fun — and don’t forget to brake!
Conditions for downhill mountain biking: who can give it a go?
Downhill mountain biking is a demanding sport, accessible to those ready to take on the challenge. Here are the main criteria to bear in mind:
- Physical condition: unlike classic mountain biking, downhill mainly engages the upper body and reflexes. You need to be ready to absorb impact and keep your balance on rough terrain.
- Minimum age: most resorts in Savoie offer trails suitable for young riders from age 10–12, provided they are accompanied and wearing the appropriate safety gear.
- Essential equipment: full-face helmet, chest, elbow and knee protection — sometimes even a back protector — are essential. Downhill bikes are specifically designed to absorb impact, with reinforced suspension and powerful brakes. Safety equipment is provided by our partner for your mountain activity. Gloves (usually not provided) are highly recommended.
- Weather and preparation: weather conditions can turn a fun descent into a real technical challenge. On rainy days, the trails get slippery and the roots treacherous. Best to check before setting off.
