Why does mountain yoga recharge us so much?

Mountain yoga lets you live a unique recharging experience in the exceptional setting of the Alps. Before discovering the benefits of mountain yoga, let’s look at the practice of yoga itself. Yoga, from the Sanskrit Yuj, means “Union”: the union of body and mind, and the union of self with one’s environment. Integrating body, thought and spirit, yoga encompasses a broad spectrum of physical, mental and spiritual techniques that allow the practitioner  to develop a sharper level of consciousness, in particular of the present moment.

From yesterday to today, yoga in all its forms

Yoga is a millennia-old discipline that emerged in India, rich in teaching and wisdom. Although clues point to the birth of a spirituality of mystical and emotional character 7,000 years before Christ, the first traces of the appearance of yoga date back to the 5th century BC. Classical Hindu texts describe yoga, speaking in particular of three paths to liberation: the path of knowledge, that of selfless action, and the path of spiritual devotion.
In contemporary times, yoga is lived in many ways with numerous disciplines and techniques, and its essence remains the same. The most practised remains Hatha Yoga (“yoga of effort”), which relies on bodily work and mental attitude.

Mountain yoga, or mindfulness amplified

Mountain yoga brings consciousness of the present moment, wellbeing, physical and mental fullness, calm, serenity. This description strangely resembles the feelings that come over us when we contemplate the mountains, when our gaze gets lost in the multiple details that slip across the summits, when we try to follow the ridge line that contrasts with the sky. Nothing is more inspiring than standing on your mat in such a sumptuous environment, drawing your energy from that of the mountains — strong, vast, proud. Find your visual anchor point of mountain yoga to keep your balance (drishti) in the meanderings of the reliefs that lie before us, and breathe in the pure alpine air with all your being.

Tadasana, or the mountain pose

It is no accident that one of yoga’s main poses is called Tadasana (from “tada”, which means mountain in Sanskrit), or the mountain pose. Marking the beginning and the end of the sun salutation, it is practised standing, feet shoulder-width apart, arms alongside the body and palms turned outward to open the shoulders, or hands joined at chest level, chin slightly tucked towards the chest to lengthen the spine.

The practice of this asana (yoga pose) promotes stability, solidity and strength. Tadasana eliminates poor postures and develops correct alignment of the skeleton. It also lets you become aware of a good distribution of body weight. Tadasana is a pose that roots us to the ground to establish a solid base to be raised towards the sky, in the same way as the summit of the mountain. Calm comes over us, offering us stability and physical and mental solidity.
