Yoga, from the Sanskrit Yuj, means “Union”: that of body and mind, and the union of the self with one’s environment. Before introducing you to the benefits of mountain yoga, let us look at the practice of yoga. Integrating body, thought and mind, it covers a broad spectrum of physical, mental and spiritual techniques that let the practitioner develop a more precise level of awareness, particularly of the present moment.
From yesterday to today, yoga in all its forms
Yoga is a millennia-old discipline that emerged in India, rich in teaching and wisdom. Although clues point to the birth of a mystical and emotional spirituality 7,000 years before Christ, the first traces of yoga’s emergence go back to the 5th century BC. Classical Hindu texts describe yoga, mentioning in particular three paths of liberation: the path of knowledge, the path of selfless action, and the path of spiritual devotion.
In the contemporary era, yoga is lived in many ways with many disciplines and techniques, but its essence remains the same. The most practised remains Hatha Yoga (“yoga of effort”), based on bodywork and mental attitude.

Mountain yoga, or mindfulness multiplied
Yoga brings awareness of the present moment, wellness, physical and mental fulfilment, calm, serenity… This description strangely resembles the feelings that take hold of us when we contemplate the mountains, when our gaze gets lost in the many details that slip across the peaks, when we try to follow the ridge line that contrasts with the sky. Nothing is more inspiring than standing on your mat in such a sumptuous environment, drawing your energy from that of the mountains – strong, vast, proud. Finding your visual anchor for mountain yoga to keep your balance (drishti) in the meandering reliefs that open up before us, and breathing in the pure alpine air, with all your being.
Tadasana or mountain pose

It is no coincidence that one of the main yoga poses is called Tadasana (from “tada”, meaning mountain in Sanskrit), or mountain pose. Marking the beginning and the end of the sun salutation, it is practised standing, feet hip-width apart, arms along the body and palms turned outwards to open the shoulders, or hands joined at chest level, chin slightly tucked towards the chest to lengthen the spine.
The practice of this asana (yoga pose) fosters stability, solidity and strength… Tadasana removes poor posture and develops correct skeletal alignment. It also lets you become aware of a good distribution of body weight. Tadasana is a pose that grounds us to the earth to establish a solid base to rise towards the sky, in the same way as the mountain summit. Calm takes hold of us, offering us stability and physical and mental solidity…
