Snow Mountain Bike

The snow mountain bike, also known as fatbike, is a fast-growing winter activity that combines the adrenaline of mountain biking with snowy mountain landscapes. Whether you’re a seasoned mountain biker or a curious beginner, this discipline offers a unique experience accessible to all.

How about discovering this mountain activity on your next holiday or your corporate retreat in the Alps?

The origins of snow mountain biking

The fatbike was born in the 1980s in Alaska, where cyclists started welding several rims together to create wider wheels that could ride on snow and sand. This innovation paved the way for bikes adapted to soft terrain, opening the door to snow mountain biking.

Fatbike vs snow MTB: what’s the difference?

The fatbike stands out with its oversized tyres (up to 4 inches wide) inflated at low pressure, offering excellent grip on snow. A traditional MTB, on the other hand, may be fitted with wider, studded tyres to improve traction, but it will be less effective on heavily snow-covered terrain. The choice between the two depends on snow conditions and your level of experience.

The ideal conditions for the activity

Snow mountain biking generally takes place on groomed pistes or snowy trails with compact snow. Ideal conditions include cold temperatures to keep the snow firm and avoid icy patches. We recommend riding in groups and staying on marked routes for safety.

Guided outings take place at the end of the day after the ski runs close.
