snowshoe walk

The vast expanses of snow make you melt and you recharge your batteries in contact with nature and the elements? So, this winter, all to your snowshoes! They are the best ally of lovers of wide open spaces and fresh air wishing to conquer the mountains off the beaten track.

Snowshoes: how do they work?

The operation of snowshoes is basic and ancestral: by increasing the bearing surface on the ground, they make it possible not to sink into the fresh snow and to be able to progress easily, even in fields of beautiful powder. And the wider the sieve, the greater the lift.

Its practice does not require any prerequisites, apart from knowing how to walk. Children, grandparents, novices or athletes, everyone can indulge in it provided they respect their own pace, are well equipped and do not venture just anywhere (the risk of an avalanche is never to be neglected in the mountains…)! It is therefore preferable to leave with a guide who will advise you on the right behavior to follow and the route to take.

Snowshoes: how to equip yourself?

In order to be comfortable and to optimize the conditions of practice, it is important to equip yourself correctly. Choose a pair of light, well-fitting, warm and waterproof shoes. Winter hiking boots are ideal. Be careful not to tighten the snowshoe straps too tightly around the ankle, which could hinder good blood circulation and cause a feeling of cold and discomfort.

We will also remember to bring a pair of sticks, precious allies to facilitate its progress by distributing the weight of the body between the lower and upper limbs. Ideally, we will opt for a pair of telescopic poles, that is to say adjustable in length, which allow their height to be varied according to the situation: short on the ascent, long on the descent.

Snowshoes: where to practice it?

Autonomous sport that does not require ski lifts, there is no need to wait until you have reached the resorts to put on your shoes and go for a walk. Whether on the plains, in the forest, on small paths or large expanses, snowshoeing can be practiced anywhere as long as there is snow, although it is not essential on hard snow in which we do not sink. Hikers have understood this well and this allows them to continue practicing a sport that is similar to walking throughout the winter.

We can thus discover small hidden corners, without necessarily having to follow a path. It is therefore a good way to get in touch with nature, to explore places where you could not venture without anything on your feet, at the risk of getting stuck!

This can be a nice idea for example for a picnic in the middle of nature on a beautiful sunny day, where an owl goes out to walk his dog even under big snowflakes. Surely he will be delighted!

mountain in winter

The sinkholes of La Plagne, the snowshoe spot par excellence

Sinkholes are circular rock depressions resulting from soil erosion. The cavities are shallow and soft to La Plagne. With columns of harder rock like chimneys, the sinkholes form a magical landscape and are ideal for snowshoeing. A mountain guide can help you discover them in complete safety.

Snowshoe outings in the sinkholes last winter had some nice surprises in store for our customers: a total change of scenery just a stone's throw from the resort, a dazzling view of Mont Blanc, a face-to-face with a fox, slides on the buttocks … Suffice to say that young and old loved it! Let yourself be tempted by discovering their best winter mountain holiday memories.
