Discovery of the world of igloos
After being well prepared, dressed warmly and methodically, equipped with our headlamp, we are ready for this completely extraordinary evening that awaits us. End of the day, beginning of the evening, it is now time to go.
The igloo village, in the middle of the ski area, is reached after a twenty-minute walk, only reinforcing the excitement and curiosity that drives us.
In the distance, we gradually see the lights emanating from the flames of the wood fire that awaits us in the middle of the “village”, warming the place, as if welcoming visitors for an evening.
The “iglootiers” reserve us a warm welcome and invite us to follow them in the "kitchen igloo". The ambient temperature challenges us because here it is stable, around zero, and frankly easy to bear with our equipment. It must be recognized that the hearty and gourmet meal that we taste – a creamy and much appreciated Savoyard fondue – must also have something to do with it. Our hosts do not fail to answer our questions on the manufacturing processes of these ephemeral habitats, their know-how and their experience. They also enlighten us in a benevolent way on the course of the night to come and the questions multiply as to the things to do, not to do. For example, they recommend that we position our anoraks and ski pants correctly under our sleeping bags so that they are not frozen when we wake up.
A night in an igloo-bliable igloo
We didn't take long to discover our “bedroom” igloos and go to our beds, taking care to apply the advice given by our hosts a few minutes earlier. Therefore and for the first time, we will sleep with our caps on our heads because they retain the heat of our body and our technical underwear that we wear under our wetsuits. Comfortably curled up in our specific duvets for polar expeditions and still observing the spartan but efficient decoration of our one-day cabin, we fell asleep, against all odds, very quickly and slept soundly.
The next morning, we wake up early, dressing straight into our sleeping bags before heading outside. Dazzled by the first rays of the sun which appear, the spectacle of this nature which is slowly waking up is striking, sublimated by the ambient silence which reigns around us and the surrounding peaks and which seems to embrace us, whispering in our ears the promise of a wonderful day ahead.
